Fourth, concerning the boundary: among the four kinds of natural boundaries, in the rites of karman, only the single rite of demarcating the boundary is conducted by the saṃgha; beyond this, the two rites of face-to-face and mental-intention, as well as the miscellaneous rites among the saṃgha for one, two, or three persons, and pravāraṇā for four persons, may all be performed. All must assemble fully. Second, regarding the ritual boundary that encloses the saṃgha: it also accommodates two persons, and the rites accommodate three kinds. Within the ritual boundary, it is divided into five ranks: first, the minor boundary for upasampadā in the event of adversity; second, pravāraṇā due to adversity; third, upoṣadha recitation by a few persons. These three minor boundaries are special allowances made due to adversity; they are only for performing a single rite, and if leisure later prevails, performing them is not allowed; hence the text says that as soon as they are demarcated they are dissolved, not being permanent rites. Fourth, the sīmā-platform: originally permitted to be demarcated because frequent assemblies annoyed the saṃgha; with the sole exceptions of upoṣadha recitation, pravāraṇā, begging for a bowl, forfeiture and confession, the rites for deceased persons' robes, receiving days of absence, dissolving a boundary, demarcating a robe boundary and dissolving it, demarcating pure ground, and receiving the merit robe (kaṭhina), etc. Fifth, the great boundary: within it, there are passages and obstructions, which may be understood according to their characteristics.
