初明七非者：一者人非，謂以此法，對人而作。二者法非，口不言了，法不稱教。三者事非，謂重吉羅，用責心悔，六念等事，一一非法；妄牒而誦，不成有罪。四者人法非，不妨事如。五者人事非，不妨法如。六者事法非，不妨人是。七具三非，並同上。餘則例之。

First, explaining the seven defects: First, defect in person: namely, performing this rite facing another person. Second, defect in rite: the mouth does not speak distinctly, and the ritual formula does not accord with the teaching. Third, defect in matter: namely, using mental repentance for grave duṣkṛta, or for matters like the six recollections, each being unlawful; falsely specifying them and reciting leads to invalidity and offense. Fourth, defect in person and rite, while the matter is proper. Fifth, defect in person and matter, while the rite is proper. Sixth, defect in matter and rite, while the person is correct. Seventh, possessing all three defects, all as above. The rest are by analogy.
