Fourth, suspending from visiting lay households. This refers to expounding the four matters perversely before faithful laypeople, causing illicit affliction and confusion, damaging the faith of laypeople; or scolding and slandering laypeople, and departing abruptly. The saṃgha must perform a procedure to suspend him, not allowing him to depart, and sending him to apologize to the laypeople. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: If a bhikṣu accepted a definite invitation from someone for the next day, and does not go when the time comes, afflicting the faithful donor, this procedure must be applied to him. If the legal procedure is completed, a motion with two proclamations should be made to appoint a bhikṣu who possesses eight qualities: 1. Learned; 2. Able to speak well; 3. Having spoken, able to explain it himself; 4. Able to understand the minds of others; 5. Receptive to others' words; 6. Able to remember and retain; 7. Free from defects; 8. Understanding good and bad speech and deliberation. He leads the disciplined person to the house of the faithful layperson and says to them: 'Dānapati! Accept his repentance! The saṃgha has already executed punishment on the bhikṣu so-and-so.' If he immediately repents together with him, it is good; if he is unwilling, there are rules on whether to advance or not, fully as spoken in the Vinaya. If the layperson is pleased, it is immediately revoked for him.
