Further, explaining comprehensively the similarities and differences among the four [disciplinary] karmans and the three [suspension] karmans. The individuals subjected to the former four procedures merely have their conduct damaged, while their minds still have faith; in the Vinaya, they count toward the saṃgha quorum and are subject to karman procedures; but being disciplined, they cannot reprimand or bring charges against others. The latter three karmans are called the three suspensions; both their faith and conduct are corrupted. Cast outside the assembly, they do not count toward the saṃgha quorum; their offenses and manifestations are grave and deep, beyond assimilation and salvation, so the extreme law is prescribed. The Vinaya distinguishes this category as being identical to grave offenses; even when dying, all their assets enter the saṃgha that shared in suspending them, to reward their merit. The Nirvāṇa Sūtra states: For those who slander the Dharma, perform this subjugating karman. It also demonstrates that all evil deeds have retribution. Nowadays, those who study the language of the Great Vehicle, whose minds have not yet entered the Path, their conduct violates both the Great and Lesser Vehicles; with their mouths they claim there is no offense and no repentance, that sexual desire is the Path; with their bodies they also practice evil, considering whatever aligns with themselves as right and whatever opposes them as wrong. All of them warrant this discipline.
