Sixth, suspension for not repenting. However, offenses have no fixed intrinsic nature; they arise from conditions. In principle, they should be repented and eradicated, returning to original purity. Yet now, breaking the four matters of precepts and views, having offended, he is unwilling to repent, falsely and chaotically asserting that he will not repent; the defiling obstruction is especially deep, and advancing on the Path has no foreseeable day. Therefore he must be suspended and cast out, and only when he submits may it be revoked. In the sūtra it is named the eradication karman, penalizing the person concerned to make him eradicate the offense. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: When a person subjected to the three suspensions has a mind that is subdued and gentle, he announces to the saṃgha: 'My mind is subdued and gentle; I pray the saṃgha will relinquish the legal status for me.' Having made the announcement, he steps back and withdraws. The leading bhikṣu of the assembly deliberates whether it is permissible or not, and after that he requests revocation.
