He should take his robes and bowl, unfold and display them, using this opportunity to instruct and guide him. First, holding the five-strip robe, he says: "This is called the antarvāsa robe." Pointing to the one worn on his body, [he says:] "This is called the uttarāsaṅga." Holding the great robe, he says: "This robe is called the saṃghāṭī." The Sarvāstivāda-vinaya-vibhāṣā states: "The names of these three robes are not found among any of the tīrthikas; now I show you their names and forms." If one relies on various vinaya traditions, this is where the robes and bowl are formally conferred upon him; or it is done in the midst of the assembly by the precept-master. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya has no explicit text. Or, [the candidate] only wears them after receiving [the precepts]; both methods may be retained. Then, holding the bowl, he says: "This vessel is called a pātra." "Are these robes and bowl your own?" He answers: "They are." Then he wraps them up. Or the ritual of conferring [the robes and bowl] is added, as before.
