Fourth, seeking robes, a bowl, or even medicinal herbs: If one is severely ill oneself and cannot bear taking leave for days, one is permitted to go straightaway without needing to take leave, as explained above under life-threatening dangers during varṣā. Nowadays, there are people who, for the sake of robes, medicine, and the like, often falsely request days. According to the precept against exceeding contentment, forfeiting three and receiving three still incurs a nihsargika-pāyattika; nowadays, extra wealth is abundant while one lacks the three robes; this is relinquishing the prohibition to take the allowance, failing to follow the Buddha's teachings. If one is truly deficient in both extra wealth and material goods, according to the precept on begging for robes, one may simply beg outside. As for medicinal herbs and the like, it also means that one is poor oneself, and the dwelling place as well as places reached by a day's round trip do not have them—then it is permitted; if on the contrary they can be obtained, it is not a valid circumstance and [the leave] is not accomplished.
