Fifth, in terms of the mind. There are three: first, observing precepts with a wholesome mind, meaning cultivating pure conduct detached from defilement, addressing fundamental evil, remaining undefiled when coerced by an enemy across the three times, and so forth. An unwholesome mind means doing so for fame and profit, worldly retribution, and so forth. An indeterminate mind means madness, sleep, and so forth. If evaluated in terms of active observance, the high, middle, and low are not equal. If viewed from the standpoint of conforming to the teaching, there is none that is not precept observance, without distinguishing the three minds.
