Third: aiming the mind at the appropriate object. This means that at the time of confronting the object, if there is bewilderment or error, or the object is mistaken, or there are other conditions [involving] the morally indeterminate, or sleeping without awareness, none of these constitute an actual offense. If one has previously undertaken expedients, and subsequently [the mind engages] according to any of the three natures of mind, [an offense] is indeed incurred. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya and the *Abhidharmasaṃgīti-śāstra* state: If one has first undertaken expedients to kill one's mother, and while one is asleep the mother dies, this is an indeterminate mind, yet one incurs a heinous sin and a grave [offense]. When an arhat breaks a precept with an indeterminate mind or while asleep, upon awakening he immediately repents; ordinary beings must be judged accordingly. The *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa* states: An arhat does not sleep due to dreaming; it is merely for the sake of the four great elements that he rests for a short time.
