Fourth: being free from mortal danger. That is to say, if inimical bandits, non-humans, or ferocious beasts cut off one's life conditions, one may violate the former precepts. If it is a natural precept, it is strictly never allowed; how could one kill others or deceive others to preserve one's own life? Only the single precept against sexual misconduct is allowed [when coerced into] joining with an object, provided that across the three times there is no lustful defilement, because it does not harm the object. As for the rest, there is strictly prohibition. The text says: After I have formulated the precepts for the disciples, [they should] rather die than violate them. If one considers prohibitory precepts, there are allowances and prohibitions. When the power of the Path is already accomplished, one will not break them even unto death, as in the examples of the grass-bound [bhikṣu] and the sea plank (found in the *Kalpanāmaṇḍitikā*). For others whose resolve is weak, under the two dangers of life and celibacy, the lower three classes are allowed; because the upper two classes are the root of celibacy.
