Seventh: proceeding to the primary result. If one halts, it only constitutes an expedient. The marks have four divisions: First, halting as an expedient due to being blocked by the Dharma. For all the admonition precepts, upon the completion of the first formal motion one relinquishes [the offense]; because of the admonition one halts, so it does not result in the actualized fruition. Second, ceasing due to laxity. When intending to perform the previous deed, conditions break apart and obstruct it, or the other party is strong and cannot be violated, so one abandons the original intent. Third, ceasing out of a good mind. That is, when about to commit a transgression, one suddenly remembers the precept essence; fearing it will defile one's aspiration, one applies the antidote to prevent and check it, causing the evil not to continue. Fourth, ceasing because the mind doubts. This is not like a state of mistaken ideation, which proceeds to the fruition. Here, one who doubts gives rise to a mind directed toward a person, but doubts whether it is a non-human; with an unresolved doubt, fearing one might kill a non-human, one thereupon halts.
