Second, cooking within: in terms of place, pure grounds are completely barred. In terms of time, it applies to both day and night. In terms of persons, it applies to the seven assemblies. Regarding food, it applies to both raw and cooked. Regarding the four kinds of medicine, if by ritual enactment they are kept for the rest of one's life, they are permitted to stay overnight and be cooked within the boundary; the other three do not conform to this, so [they are barred]. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: 'Ānanda warmed rice for the Buddha by the gate of Jetavana.' Thus we know one must not cook within the boundary.
