Sixth, clarifying the various marks of losing the formal receipt: The *Samantapāsādikā* says: Even if previously received and held, if it is pierced to the size of a millet grain, one loses the holding; if it is plugged with iron filings, one must receive it again; if it is lopsided, slanted, or broken, none constitutes valid receipt. The *Samantapāsādikā* says: If one buys another's bowl and has not yet paid the price, it does not constitute valid receipt; even if the owner says, 'Just receive and hold it,' it also does not constitute valid receipt; if ten days elapse, it does not incur [the offense of] excess. If one buys a bowl and agrees on the price, and after smoking it the bowl owner informs the bhikṣu, but he does not go to fetch it, if ten days elapse he incurs forfeiture. If another person knows it has been smoked and conveys the message to the bhikṣu, but upon hearing the words he does not go, there is no offense. The *Dharmaguptaka-vinaya* says: If food enters the cracks and holes of a bowl or basin, if one simply washes it and the residue does not come out, there is no offense. According to this, because it does not leak, one does not lose the holding. Question: If one merely keeps a single bowl without applying the procedure of formal receipt, when the limit is exceeded does one incur forfeiture? Answer: One does not incur it. Because keeping it is prescribed, the matter is the same as the three robes; one merely commits the offense of not receiving and holding the bowl. If there is an excess [bowl], one declares it pure following the rule for robes.
