The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: When expounding the Dharma for a dānapati, one is permitted to expound sūtras and analyze their meanings, and one may omit parts of the words and phrases without speaking them completely. Two bhikṣus must not expound the Dharma on the same high seat, lest they quarrel with one another, or seek each other's merits and faults when explaining the doctrine, or press upon one another, or chant together with the same voice, or expound the Dharma with a singing voice, and so forth. It explains that a singing voice has five faults: first, oneself becomes attached to the sound; second, it causes listeners to produce craving; third, it causes others to imitate and learn it; fourth, it causes laypeople to produce arrogance; and fifth, it disrupts meditative concentration. If there are few people who can expound the Dharma, they should be invited to expound in order of seniority, down to a single verse such as 'Commit no evil deeds,' and so forth. For the night assembly to expound the Dharma, the height of the seat does not matter.
