《十誦》：說法人者，應一心說，生慈愍心、利益心，莊嚴語言、次第相續，辯才無盡，隨順諸法實相；為法故說，不為利養。此中上座，應觀察所說；若不如法說，應呵止。又聽取佛經義，莊嚴言辭，次第解說；其佛經本，當直讀誦，莫雜論議。《五分》：白衣說法，歡喜布施者，聽之。《十誦》：說法呪願讚法時，不得食。

The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: One who expounds the Dharma should expound with single-mindedness, giving rise to a mind of compassion and a mind to benefit others, adorning language in sequential succession, with inexhaustible eloquence, in accord with the true reality of all phenomena; one should expound for the sake of the Dharma, not for material gain. Here, the elder should observe what is expounded; if it is expounded not according to the Dharma, he should scold and stop it. Furthermore, one is permitted to take the meaning of the Buddha's sūtras, adorn the phrasing, and explain them in sequence; as for the original text of the Buddha's sūtras, one should directly read and recite it, not mixing in treatises and debates. The Pañcavargika-vinaya states: If a layperson expounds the Dharma and gives with joy, this is permitted. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: When expounding the Dharma, reciting incantations and wishes, or praising the Dharma, one must not eat.
