The Sarvāstivāda states: If a dānapati wishes to build a large dwelling, one should instruct and guide him to make it small, in accord with the Dharma of having few desires; but if it is built to accommodate many people, one should not oppose his intention. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: One must not instruct and convert using worldly magical incantations. One should say: 'Do not defecate or urinate facing the Tathāgata's stūpa, nor carry away dung, sweeping refuse, or washing-vessel dirty water facing it; if building houses, plowing fields, or planting crops, one should face toward the Tathāgata's stūpa.' Furthermore, on the eighth, fourteenth, and fifteenth days, one should enter the stūpas and monasteries to make offerings to the bhikṣu-saṃgha and receive the observance method. The Buddha told the dānapatis: 'If a person, with a compassionate mind, casts rice washings or rinsing water into water with unclean insects so that the insects get the scent of this food, he obtains immeasurable merit, how much more so if giving to human beings!' The Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra states: The Buddha extended his bowl to receive the foul dregs of an old mother. The Buddha received the leftover soup from Śroṇa and gave it to King Bimbisāra. The Samantapāsādikā states: One must not accept errands from laypeople; if they instruct one to pay homage to the Buddha, recite sūtras, make aspirational incantations, assemble the congregation, or perform various good deeds, there is no offense; for other, bad errands, it is a duṣkṛta.
