Second, inquiring of the host and receiving a room, etc. The Vinaya states: One asks the resident bhikṣu, 'I have so many rains; is there a room allocated for me?' If he answers that there is, one should ask, 'Is anyone residing in it?' If there is no one, one should ask, 'Are there bedding, quilts, material requisites, utensils, room furnishings, and the like?' If there are, one should take them. Arriving at the room, having opened the door, one brings out the bed, mats, and the like, and sweeps the floor clean. If one finds a needle, thread, a small knife, or even a single medicinal pill, one should set it aside; if the owner recognizes it, one should give it to him. Having cleaned and swept the room in this manner, one then returns the bedding to its original place. One inquires where the latrine and urinal are, the clean ground, the unclean ground, the stūpa of the Buddha, the stūpas of the śrāvakas, the room of the first sthavira, down to the room of the fourth sthavira, and so forth, asking about each one separately; if the guest does not ask, the host should point them out and inform him one by one, even down to saying, 'This is a spittoon, this is a chamber pot,' and so forth. The Pañcavargika Vinaya states: If the dwelling place is cramped and the occupants do not know each other, they are permitted to sit on the same bed, but not to sleep [together on it].
