Fourth, the method of inquiring about receiving offerings. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya: Once the visiting monk has paid homage to the sthaviras, he should ask where the main meal and the morning meal of the community are taken, where they assemble at night for the recitation of the precepts, and so forth. He should also ask: 'Which meals are allocated by the saṃgha? Which are meals sent by dānapatis? Which meals are for the eighth day, the fifteenth day, or the first day of the month? When dānapatis invite [the saṃgha] to a meal, whose turn is it currently?' He should also ask, 'What dānapatis will invite the community of monks to a morning meal or a main meal tomorrow? Where are the vicious dogs? Where are the good people, and where are the bad people?' The resident bhikṣu should answer according to what is asked. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya: The resident bhikṣu should inform the visiting monk of all the communal regulations of the saṃgha. If the companions of a guest have already departed, one must not inform him so as to let him know he failed to catch up with his companions; one should say, 'You may rest a little; there will be other companions.' If he has urgent personal business and must leave, one should provide provisions and entrust him to traveling companions. The Three Thousand Deeds states: When a newly arrived bhikṣu comes, ten things should be provided to him: 1. one should vacate and give him a room; 2. one should supply what he needs; 3. one should inquire after his health morning and evening; 4. one should inform him of local customs; 5. one should teach him what taboos to avoid; 6. one should inform him of where meal invitations have reached; 7. one should inform him of the orders and instructions of the saṃgha; 8. one should tell him which things are permissible to eat; 9. one should show him the prohibitions of the local magistrates; 10. one should inform him of the places with bandits and thieves.
