Seventh, the various practices of mutual integration. Because nuns lacked companions, they frequently ordained improper persons; merely seeking personal gain, they did not conform to the teachings of the Path; therefore, over twenty precepts in the Vinaya specifically formulate offenses for the upādhyāyikā. Thus the Vinaya says: Having ordained a disciple, one should integrate her by means of robes, food, and the Dharma. The Pañcavargika-vinaya states: The teacher-monk should integrate disciples personally for six years, or instruct others to integrate them; violating this is a pāyattika. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: When an upādhyāyikā wishes to confer full ordination on a disciple, she must first seek virtuous monks and must not select the assembly at the last moment; if they cannot be obtained, she should seek half, or more than half, to perform the karman (those who have not committed grave offenses perform the ritual; the rest who are acceptable make up the quorum). The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya says: Having received the precepts, she must not arbitrarily leave her upādhyāyikā. The Pañcavargika-vinaya states: She must rely on and serve her upādhyāyikā for six years. The remaining rules regarding instruction between master and disciple, repaying kindness and making offerings, scolding and disciplinary penalization, are all as in the upper fascicle, under "Mutual Integration of Master and Disciple".
