The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: "A person without an upādhyāya who receives the precepts obtains the precepts, but the saṃgha performing the rite incurs an offense." The Sarvāstivāda-vinaya-vibhāṣā states: "If one first requests an upādhyāya, and at the time of receiving the ten precepts the upādhyāya is not present, one still obtains the ten precepts; if one hears that he has died, one does not obtain them. For full ordination, if he is not present, one does not obtain the precepts; if the number of monks is complete, even if there is no upādhyāya, one still obtains the precepts." The Samantapāsādikā states: "One who receives [ordination] without an upādhyāya obtains the precepts and incurs an offense; a paṇḍaka serving as upādhyāya is also like this." The Saṃghabhedavastu states: "If a layperson serves as upādhyāya and confers [ordination] on a layperson, they obtain the precepts and incur an offense; one who is not a renunciant is also like this." The Sarvāstivāda-vinaya-vibhāṣā states: "One who receives ordination without shaving beard and hair or without robes and bowl obtains the precepts and incurs an offense." If judged by the Dharmaguptaka, none of these are permitted; the Vinaya says: "This is not called receiving full ordination." The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: "If a man adopts the deportment of a woman and receives [ordination] as a man, he obtains the precepts and incurs an offense; the perception of being a woman is the reverse of the above." The Pañcavargika-vinaya states: "If one cuts off one's own male organ, but retains one testicle, one may receive [ordination]; if completely lacking them, one is permanently expelled." The Five Hundred Questions states: "If the master monks on the platform wear secular clothing or violate the prohibitive precepts, if the ordinand knows it is unlawful, he does not obtain [the precepts]; if he does not know, he obtains them. If the disciple wears secular clothing and is not questioned at the time, he obtains them." The Saṃghabhedavastu states: "If one does not know the upādhyāya is living as a thief and relies on him to receive ordination, one obtains the precepts; the bhikṣus incur a duṣkṛta. A person who originally broke the precepts, a person who was originally discordant, or a non-renunciant serving as an upādhyāya are also like this."
