Sixth: people, male and female slaves. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: monastery servants are classed as heavy. All personal possessions, whether light or heavy, belong to their private ownership; if a monastery slave dies, their clothes and items are given to their relatives; if there are none, they are used by the permanent resident saṃgha. When a private slave dies, there are theoretically two cases: if they shared food and clothing, their necessary property is taken by the master into their own ownership to dispose of at will. If they did not live communally, and the master merely took charge of them and provided food and clothing, at their death the property goes to their relatives; if there are none, it is treated like ownerless property within the monastery grounds and goes to the permanent resident saṃgha (going to relatives is modeled on the case where an expelled monk dies and his clothes and items go to his relatives; if the saṃgha supported him, it is not the same). The Vinayamātṛkā states: if there are slaves, they should be emancipated and let go; if not emancipated, they are made into kappiyakārakas of the saṃgha (by this standard, emancipation means granting them a surname and restoring them to commoner status; later affairs follow the Vinaya).
