Precept thirty-one: excessively receiving [meals] at a place offering a single meal. There are five conditions: first, the donor sets a limit of a single meal; second, knowing that it is so; third, repeatedly and excessively receiving; fourth, having no cause; fifth, transgressing upon eating. In the Vinaya, an exception is made for one who is sick, where leaving that village would aggravate [the illness]. As for non-offenses: receiving a meal for a single night; excessively receiving meals when sick; if various householders invite a venerable one to stay and offer him food; if inviting and offering food in succession; or if roads by water and land are severed, etc., there is no offense.
