Precept 87: Exceeding the standard measure for a sitting mat (niṣīdāna). Constituted by five conditions: first, making a sitting mat; second, exceeding the standard measure; third, for oneself; fourth, making it oneself or having someone make it; fifth, completion constitutes the offense. In the Vinaya: four feet in length by the Ji-Zhou ruler, three feet in width, with an additional foot added to both length and width outside the border; this is the prescribed measurement (the rest is explained in detail in the robe regulations). It also says: If exceeding the measure, or if deficient in one dimension while exceeding in another, whether completed by oneself or another, all are pāyattika; if uncompleted, or if made for another whether completed or not, all are duṣkṛta. Non-offenses include: making it according to measure or making it undersized; if obtaining an already completed one from another, cutting it down to size; or if making it two layers, there is no offense (making it oversized now is not permitted by various traditions, nor is it permitted in the 'Council of the Seven Hundred' in the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya). The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: If one wishes to repent, cut off what is beyond the measure (meaning what is beyond the original measure, not the addition), and repent according to the Dharma. Formally deconsecrate the rest. If it has already exceeded ten days, relinquish it in accordance with the rules for extra robes, based on the robe regulations in the Sarvāstivāda-vinaya-vibhāṣā.
