Fourth: leather and pelts, and the like. Under the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya, leather garments and bark garments must not be worn at all, and thus are classed as heavy. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: regarding leather goods, oil bags holding half a dou or less, straps for securing sandals, boot leather, leather hampers, dressed leather, and toe-wrapping leather should be distributed; anything beyond these is classed as heavy. Straight boots and slanted boots are classed as heavy, as they are not robes of the Path; the rest are classed as light. The Vinayamātṛkā states: if sūtras or vinayas were previously entrusted to a recipient, they are to be given to that person; if they were not entrusted, they should be given to whoever can uphold and recite them, and must not be divided or sold. Secular books and plain paintings are classed as heavy; paper, brushes, and ink are by rule classed as light, as they can be used to support the teachings of the Path. Vessels for holding bath powder are merely functional utensils, and are determined by rule according to the Daśādhyāya-vinaya.
