In the eighth [part], there are two. First, clarifying [confession] facing a partner. “Revealing words facing the assembly” refers to performing the procedure facing an individual before the assembly. The vinaya states: “One should go to a pure bhikṣu, fully adopt dignified deportment, state the name and category of the offense committed, and address him, saying: ‘May the Venerable One remember me, the bhikṣu so-and-so, who has committed such-and-such an offense. I now reveal it to the Venerable One, and will subsequently repent according to the Dharma.’ (Spoken three times. One who remembers at the time of poṣadha must use this procedure; at other times, one repents according to the Dharma.)” Also, in the vinaya, when a bhikṣu has doubts about an offense and is further pressed to recite the precepts, the Buddha said: “Having revealed it, one may hear the precepts.” He also speaks facing a person: “May the Venerable One remember me, the bhikṣu so-and-so, who has conceived doubt regarding such-and-such an offense. I now reveal it to the Venerable One; later, when there is no doubt, I will repent according to the Dharma.” (Spoken three times. The above is derived according to the *Annotated Karmavācanā*.) From “Fearing...” downward, second, clarifying mental reflection, which also has two [parts]: first, clarifying the procedure for recognizing an offense. In the vinaya, because while seated one suddenly remembers an original offense and speaks to the adjacent seat, causing the entire assembly to become clamorous and disorderly, the Buddha instructed that one reveal through mental reflection, but did not set forth the text; the author of the *Transactions Manual* established it by principle. According to the *Karmavācanā*, beneath the characters “reciting the precepts,” one further adds a phrase stating, “fearing to make the assembly clamorous and disorderly.” It must also be spoken three times. From “If...” downward, clarifying the procedure for doubtful offenses. One should say, “I, so-and-so, have conceived doubt regarding such-and-such an offense,” the remaining wording being identical by analogy.
