The Daśādhyāya-vinaya first explains the special dispensation for different boundaries. Regarding 'jointly binding': that text states: 'The retreat having ended, if the monasteries on the four sides are eight, nine, ten, or more, they jointly bind a single boundary to receive the kathina robe; all the bhikṣus are said to have received it.' 'Later binding separately' means that having performed the procedure to receive it, they immediately dissolve and immediately bind [their own boundaries], not waiting for the five months to be completed. That text asks: 'If the aforementioned monasteries jointly bind and receive it, and then dissolve this great boundary, are these bhikṣus said to have received the robe?' Answer: 'All are said to have received it.' Regarding 'those who abandon, etc.': as when in one place the community does not delight in the benefits and does not wait for the period to expire; whether they abandon it through a formal act or lose it by encountering circumstances, it does not impede other places. That text asks: 'If many monasteries jointly bind and receive it, and having dissolved this boundary, dissolve the kathina robe, are all the bhikṣus said to have abandoned it?' Answer: 'Those who abandon it abandon it; those who do not abandon it do not abandon it.' Here, in citing the answer, its words are slightly altered. Second, it screens out transgressors. 'Expelled persons' refers to final expulsion. That text only lists four persons; now, adding 'etc.', it further encompasses those who ought to be expelled and those who have been subjected to the three acts of suspension; because they are cast outside the Saṃgha, they may not share the Dharma. (The various texts do not screen out the four karmavācanā-recipients; by exploring the meaning, it seems they should be included.)
