In the Samantapāsādikā, first it clarifies the quantity of robes used. 'Heavy articles' refers to sending money, jewels, and the like. From 'if by karmavācanā' downward, this explains selecting the destitute from among those endowed with the five virtues; because the robe belongs to him, it provides some relief. What this sub-heading explains specifically screens the five virtues of the robe-holder. Furthermore, the commentary states: 'Regarding the three robes, according to the words of the donor, all are given to the recipient of the robe (namely, the one with the five virtues); the Saṃgha may not receive the kathina robe.' (The old view that once the five months are completed, one returns to give this robe to those in the community whose robes are worn out, etc., is mistaken.)
