The final sub-heading refers to the broader text while stating a concise summary. Although this does not present it, in the earlier section on the robe-substance the text was also detailed. We further cite the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya to show it; that text says: 'If an outsider gives robe material, one must not accept it silently; one should speak thus: "I now receive the kathina robe material." Having received it, going into the Saṃgha, one performs a jñaptidvitīyā karmavācanā and informs the Saṃgha, saying: "Let the venerable Saṃgha listen! The Saṃgha has obtained this timely robe material. If the Saṃgha's time has arrived, let the Saṃgha take this kathina robe. Such is the motion." (The karmavācanā is performed accordingly, combining the above original circumstances as the second phrase.) Next, one appoints those capable of making the robe, whether one person or two or three persons, appointing them through a jñaptidvitīyā karmavācanā (as above). Having appointed them, one person serves as the master. When receiving the robe material, one should say these words: "Receive this kathina robe material, which the Saṃgha is to receive" (three times). When washing, one should say: "Wash this kathina robe, which the Saṃgha is to receive." Thus when cutting, when sewing, when dyeing, and when dotting to purify, in accordance with whatever is being done, one speaks as above three times. If one does it without speaking, it is also accomplished, but one incurs an ativyatikrama offense.'
