In the Daśādhyāya-vinaya: the Buddha instituted that before five rains retreats, a bhikṣu must concentrate purely on the Vinaya division. If one masters maintenance and violation and discerns the affairs of a bhikṣu, only then may one study the sūtras and treatises. Nowadays people skip the stages to study; since their practice has already lost its order, there is no way for them to enter the path. The great sage's scolding was certainly not in vain. Furthermore, that Vinaya states: the Buddha, seeing that the bhikṣus did not study the Vinaya, then praised the Vinaya and praised Upāli face-to-face as foremost in upholding the Vinaya. Later, the elders and senior bhikṣus studied the Vinaya under Upāli. Nowadays, no sooner do people touch the precept-rank than they listen to doctrinal teachings and participate in Chan. As for the deportment of a monastic, they understand nothing at all. How much more do they transgress the restraints of the precepts and slander the Vinaya! They disparage studying the Vinaya as Hīnayāna, and disregard upholding the precepts as clinging to marks. Thereupon they run wild in worldly dust, indulging themselves in villainy and stubbornness. Fond of cups and meat, they call themselves versatile; engaging in lust and anger, they claim to have penetrated the path. Not plumbing the sacred intent, they mistakenly interpret the true vehicle. Furthermore, if the precepts must be despised, why did you mount the platform to receive them? If the Vinaya must be slandered, why did you shave your hair and dye your robes? Thus, despising the precepts is entirely despising oneself; slandering the Vinaya turns out to be slandering oneself. Deluded passions are easily practiced; the correct path is hard to hear. Those who transcend the mundane and surpass the multitude are not one in ten thousand. I pray you examine the sacred instruction—how can you not follow it!
