The Sūtra of Mahāmāyā: there, because Queen Māyā asked Ānanda when the Dharma would be extinguished, Ānanda sequentially explained the events of fifteen hundred years, all heard from the Buddha. That text says: starting from the compilation and concluding with the emergence into the world of Nāgārjuna in the seven-hundredth year, who destroyed the banner of heterodox views and lit the torch of the True Dharma. (This is not the main point at present, so the manual does not cite it.) The initial two lines concern the events of eight hundred years. The two lines from "slaves…" down concern the events of nine hundred years. The line from "not…" down concerns the events of one thousand years. From "destroying…" down concerns the events of eleven hundred years (also in this year bhikṣus acted like laypeople in matchmaking and marriage). In the twelve-hundredth year, bhikṣus and bhikṣuṇīs engaged in unchaste conduct; if they had children, males became bhikṣus and females became bhikṣuṇīs (the manual omits this year). From "kaṣāya…" down concerns the events of thirteen hundred years. (Nowadays kaṣāyas are mostly dyed purple; how could it only be white stripes? This is proof of the extinction of the Dharma.) From "greed…" down concerns the events of fourteen hundred years. In the fifteen-hundredth year, the Tripiṭaka master of the country of Kauśāmbī and his arhat disciples killed one another; evil demons and non-Buddhists vied in destroying stupas and monasteries and killing bhikṣus; the dragon king Anavatapta took all the sūtra piṭakas into the sea, whereupon the Buddha's Dharma became completely extinct. (This is spoken in terms of the single country of Kauśāmbī. Some places speak of five thousand years, or one thousand years each for the True and Semblance [Dharma], ten thousand years for the Final Dharma, and so forth; or sixty thousand years, seventy thousand years, and so forth. These are all differences seen according to the karmic conditions of sentient beings.)
