In [the section on] with difficulties, first it cites the text to show it. "On the outside" means that the person who may object to the karma is not in the same boundary. From "calculating" onwards, the figure is shown: one hundred and ninety-six forearms is altogether thirty-five chang, two feet, and eight inches; thirty chang makes fifty paces, four chang and eight feet makes eight paces, and the remainder is as counted. Question: Why is it called "with difficulties"? Answer: People of the past merely said evil bhikṣus create hindrances, hence many false interpretations arose; now it must be screened and determined. This refers to a person within the original boundary who has the right to object, whose mind does not consent, and therefore comes to object to the karma so that the transaction is not accomplished; hence it is called a difficulty. This is what the Samantapāsādikā calls "one whose intention is not the same." Is this not clear! (Some who claim that having difficulty assembling due to a neighboring monastery constitutes "with difficulties" are mistaken.) Question: For this kind [called] "with difficulties," which transactions use it? Answer: This is restricted to the three small [boundaries] and does not extend to other transactions; hence we know that "with difficulties" derives its name from the three small ones. The Commentary's explanation of the text on the three small boundaries assembling the Saṃgha states: since there are conditions of difficulty, it is not comparable to the ordinary path, and one should use the Samantapāsādikā's seven-pāṣāṇa assembly. Is this not clear evidence! This is a fixed definition; do not be alarmed or confused. (If someone does not accept this, let him compare it with the three small boundaries in the "Chapter on Establishing Boundaries," and the right and wrong will be visible; if not so, then for what transactions would the natural boundary with difficulties be used? Ponder this.)
