Regarding the four cases, the previous two paths are opened into two further cases. The first sentence presents the fourth [case], because their essence is both proper. The third presents the second [case], because their essence is both deficient. To state the essentials: in the first, the essence is right but the marks are wrong, so they are rejected; in the third, the essence is deficient but the marks are right, so they are accepted; in the second, both are wrong, so they are rejected; in the fourth, both are right, so they are both accepted and rejected, which may be understood by looking at the text. It also speaks of "essence and object": "essence" means the precept-essence, and "object" means the human object.
