In "Loss through encountering circumstances": First, for passing away: according to the Karma Commentary, if in a room or in the midst of the way, chanda can be regarded as not having arrived; if in the Saṃgha, if it has not yet been declared it is invalid, but if it has already been declared while present in the Saṃgha, it is valid; the rest is as stated there. For "quitting the path": according to the commentary's explanation, if after receiving [chanda] one says oneself that one is returning to lay life, even if one promptly regrets it, it is still lost, because of being separated by lay sentiments. For "entering an external path": this refers to dwelling in an external path's quarters within the same monastery; this often existed in the Western Countries [India], but is not so in this land. For "different sects": this means either Devadatta's remote heterodox faction, or school tenets of a different sect. For "the ordination platform [sīmā]": the commentary states that one suspects the former entails crossing the boundary, whereas this is restricted to within it.
