Under indicating the marks of invalidity: in the first heading, the upper two sentences indicate the intention of necessity. The above clarified the demarcations, and their applied use should all be in accordance; if there are necessarily errors and violations, success or failure cannot be distinguished, so by right one should here thoroughly show the marks of invalidity. From "merely" downward, clarifying the intention of brevity. "Advancing or not" means succeeding or not succeeding. From "must" downward, pointing to the extensive treatment. That text is also lost. The intention behind composing the two manuals—on transactions and on meaning—is briefly clarified in the preface; please examine this text, and only then will you know it is not in error. Question: Since this is omitted here, why does the text below thoroughly list the seven invalidities? Answer: This merely refers to the seven invalidities in the Vinaya text. The Karmavācanā lists them thoroughly. In the commentary, they are briefly raised, yet four gates are opened; ancient explanations had extremely broad divisions and restrictions; now, to accord with the manual's intent, they are also not cited; their names are simply listed: 1. karmavācanā that is non-dharma and non-vinaya; 2. karmavācanā that is non-dharma by a divided saṃgha; 3. karmavācanā that is non-dharma by a harmonious saṃgha; 4. karmavācanā that is dharma by a divided saṃgha; 5. karmavācanā that resembles dharma by a divided saṃgha; 6. karmavācanā that resembles dharma by a harmonious saṃgha; 7. karmavācanā where protest is unheeded.
