In [the section on] determining the starting point: first, it indicates the method. Taking the southeast as the start tentatively relies upon gates in this land mostly facing south; when other directions are faced, it is adjusted accordingly and is not necessarily fixed. If we take the general view, regardless of the cardinal direction or corner, starting from the left corner of the monastery gate can serve as a fixed standard. "Mutually corresponding" means that the start and end reunite. From "the Vinaya..." onward, it prevents mistakes, for fear that clinging to the Vinaya text might obstruct the transactions. This is because if one starts from a cardinal direction, the four intermediate directions are not distinguished, but if one starts from an intermediate direction, both cardinal and intermediate directions are made clear; moreover, the cardinal directions are broad and indistinct, so there is nowhere to initiate [the boundary].
