In the questioning interrogator: 'Essence' refers to the general essence, that is, the original intent. 'Each and every one complete' refers to listing names and showing marks, distinguishing proper from improper. Regarding 'not like, etc.': the Commentary says: 'A master explained: As for the method of receiving precepts, the procedures require recitation; one need only follow the text so that the thirteen are complete, and if one answers 'none', one immediately obtains the precepts—why need one understand the meaning?' The Patriarchal Master then adduced the examples of not understanding and deficiency in the central and peripheral regions for relinquishing precepts, and not committing an offense when not understanding crude words for saṃghāvaśeṣa, placing them side by side to refute and break [that view]. Here he does not explain in detail, but merely reproves it briefly.
