The next section has two parts: first, stating the exhortation; below "ranhou" (thereafter), the actual exposition. In the first part there are two passages: first, exhorting the protection of the root essence. First, citing the mutual necessity of reception and subsequent practice to exhort; below "dan" (only), next, citing the four difficulties to exhort; below "gu" (hence), third, citing those of superior capacity to exhort. "The sūtras and treatises are like this": like the passages exhorting maintenance and so forth cited in the "Demonstrating the Tenets" chapter. Below "bixu" (must), exhorting the cultivation of the three trainings. Attaining the right means the noble path of the three vehicles. "Miscellaneous learning outside this" refers to secular texts, medicine, divination, and crafts, none of which are the primary undertaking; hence one knows that leaving home is solely to venerate practice of the Way. Although practices of the Way are many, they do not go beyond the three trainings. As the "Śrāmaṇera Chapter" extensively demonstrates the fundamentals of study, one should synthesize them and attain awakening in the mind. Below, a passage of the Vinaya is cited to prove that one must study. Ending only upon reaching the sagely state, it is therefore said to "multiply and increase the fruits of the śramaṇa." Under the actual exposition: simply saying "expounding the marks" necessarily includes the four reliances. The phrase "relying on the text" points to the Vinaya text; however, because the marks in the text are fully detailed and most people recite them, they are briefly omitted. Yet they are now fully recorded in the Karmavācanā for Daily Application; those in need may consult and recite them, so they are not cited again here; copying them is very easy, and I do not wish to cause mutual redundancy. Having expounded the marks, the four reliances are expounded next.
