In the Dharmaguptaka there are three parts; first, the text is cited and shown. From 'according to' below, the meaning is divided: among the first four mindsets, the first is integration through Dharma. The second and third are integration through mind: the former means pitying their incapacity, the latter means loving their possession of goodness. The fourth is integration through material service. Among the latter four mindsets: the upper two cherish kindness, like relying on a father; the lower two maintain solemnity, like serving one's sovereign. The two lines from 'reverence' below collectively display the four mindsets. Serving a father is solely through filial piety; serving a sovereign is solely through loyalty; the one who combines both is the master. The Confucian Rites states: 'A master is the title for one who teaches people by means of the Way.' Master Yang says: 'A master is a person's model and pattern.' People today lack the Way: by what can they teach others? What can they model and pattern? Recklessly gathering disciples and living together in unrighteousness, they open the gates of the four destines and block the path of the three vehicles; destroying the precepts and committing evil, they mutually praise and protect one another. What Master Yang called 'modeling what is not a model, patterning what is not a pattern' is indeed not rare. How true! From 'therefore' below, the benefit is concluded.
