The Three Thousand Proper Deportments: That text is very extensive; it is cited here in an abridged summary. The beginning of the second fascicle states: 'When a newly arrived monk wishes to go to a worthy person to request him to act as his dependence-ācārya, he should first state himself: "I, named so-and-so (first declaring his own name), am far separated from my three teachers, each being several leagues away. Now I have come here alone, originally intending to study. Successively encountering unrest in the state and commandery, I therefore arrived here. Now I take refuge in the worthy one; may the worthy one act as my dependence-ācārya. Because so-and-so has taken refuge in him, may the worthy one accept so-and-so as his disciple; the worthy one should, in accordance with the Dharma, act as ācārya for so-and-so." Having said this, he bows his head to the ground in reverence, sets forth the request, and so on.' It further states: 'For a disciple depending on an ācārya, there are five matters: first, he should go frequently; second, arriving at the door, he should snap his fingers three times; third, upon entering, he should bow with his head to the ground; fourth, he should kneel and inquire after his health; fifth, he should back out facing the door. There are another five matters: first, he goes in the morning to pay respects; second, when the teacher calls, he immediately puts on his kāṣāya and goes, and must not go bare-bodied; third, he should sweep the ground, provide wash-water, and wipe clean the bed and mats; fourth, if he has something to do, or goes out, comes in, walks, or stays, he must report it; fifth, when receiving scriptures and asking about their meaning, whether he grasps it or not, he should not harbor a fearful mind.'
