引正教中，《本律》。瞋心訶責，即毀呰戒開慈救故。杖擬畜生犯吉，出打比丘戒。

In citing the correct teaching, in the root Vinaya: scolding with an angry mind falls under the precept against speaking ill and reviling, [while it is] an exception if done out of compassion to save [someone]. Raising a stick against an animal constitutes a duṣkṛta, which comes from the precept against striking a bhikṣu.
