《地持》中。約過輕重以分三犯。罰黜者，不令依住。折伏者，以事陵辱，如《律》奪衣斷食之類。訶責者，苦言訶誡。（舊約夷殘提吉，分三犯者，未必然也。）

In the Bodhisattvabhūmi: the three offenses are distinguished according to the gravity of the fault. "Punishing and expelling" means not allowing them to dwell in dependence. "Subduing" means humiliating them through specific matters, such as the Vinaya's stripping of robes and withholding of food. "Rebuking" means scolding and admonishing with harsh words. (The old interpretation distinguishing the three offenses according to pārājika, saṃghāvaśeṣa, pāyattika, and duṣkṛta is not necessarily correct.)
