The next section: The sūtra is the Vairambha-samādhi-sūtra. It generally lists the four times. The earlier and later three kinds are broadly unfixed. The single kind at midday is the constant practice of all Buddhas; because they abide in the middle path, they borrow phenomenal affairs to express principle; in all their transforming deportment, there is none that is not centered. Under "The Buddha instituted...", it explicitly reveals the teaching's intention. Above there are three destinies, where hells are grouped with ghosts. If one wishes to transcend the three realms, one must sever the six causes. Therefore, he prohibited bhikṣus from eating like them, causing them to rely on the ultimate sage so that liberation may be anticipated. How regrettable that those foolish people eat much evening food! How can they be willing to emulate the Buddhas while contenting themselves with being identical to ghosts and beasts—one wonders what their intention could be!
