[Precept] Fifty-six. (The Buddha was in Rājagṛha. In the Bamboo Grove there was a pool, and King Bimbisāra permitted the bhikṣus to bathe in it constantly. The group of six went in to bathe in the late night; the king and his court ladies arrived at the pool and encountered them. The king could not bathe, and the ministers resented it; hence it was formulated.) The name of the precept mentions 'excess,' meaning exceeding the sacred prohibition before half a month has elapsed. Therefore, the commentary titles it 'the precept against bathing within less than half a month.' If one follows the subsequent exceptions, the five circumstances in border regions allow frequent bathing to generate worldly goodness; hence one knows this precept was restricted to the Middle Country. Since this [land] is a border region, it is considered constantly permitted. However, lessening activities and being content with little, in accordance with the regulation, is even better.
