In the explanation, it first cites the Mahīśāsaka-vinaya. In modern times, when newly ordained monks wish to recite the Prātimokṣa, their masters often torment and obstruct them, or even revile and disparage them, which directly commits this precept. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya first brings out the words of disparagement. One suffers distress from doubt out of fear of transgressing; having transgressed, one suffers searing distress. The phrase "If..." below determines the offense. In the Sarvāstivāda Vinaya Vibhāṣā, it first scolds [disparaging] the Prātimokṣa, incurring two offenses, common and distinct. Below it explains that for the preface to the precepts, one universally incurs a single offense. Citing the Vinaya: that [disparaging] the sūtras is a duṣkṛta—the Sarvāstivāda Vinaya Vibhāṣā states that disparaging the Vinaya is grave due to four reasons: first, it can give rise to the myriad goods; second, all disciples of the Buddha rely upon it and abide in it; third, it is the initial gateway to nirvāṇa; fourth, it is the necklace-adornment of the Buddha-Dharma; other sūtras lack these [features], so it is light. Furthermore, the commentary states: "This is spoken in terms of the Śrāvakayāna; the offense of disparaging the Mahāyāna is grave, beyond what comparison can determine." I personally suggest: in terms of the prohibitive teaching, both the Great and Small [Vehicles] are alike a duṣkṛta; in terms of the path of karma, heavy and light must be distinguished. The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa states: "When the kalpa-fire arises in this world, because the sin is not yet exhausted, one transfers to the great hells in the worlds of the ten directions; if the kalpa of fire arises there, one again transfers sequentially to other regions; when the kalpa of fire arises in other regions, one is reborn again into Avīci Hell in this world, cycling as before; this is the sin of destroying the Prajñāpāramitā." Furthermore, it is as extensively clarified concerning the evil retribution in the verses of the "Parable Chapter" of the Lotus Sūtra.
