There are seven chapters listed. In establishing names there are principles; principles must have an essence; essence applies to both the capable and the object; practice has a locus of completion; objects and matters are not one, and hindrance and opening differ; aroused minds are not constant, and gradual and sudden are distinct; the above five are restricted to prohibitions; the sixth connects transformative and disciplinary teachings; prohibitions have lenient and strict, and karma is divided into light and heavy; therefore one must distinguish them in turn to clarify superiority and inferiority; the above six arise mutually, each dedicated to one principle; yet in the Vinaya school, maintenance and violation are not of a single path; therefore the seventh is established to unify and subsume many positions. The great principles of the seven gates encompass beginning to end entirely; both mind and object are clear, and the marks of practice are not obscure; if one profoundly penetrates this, then all precepts and Vinaya will be as clear as pointing to the palm of one's hand; may students pay careful attention to this.
