In "Object of Maintenance and Violation," the first section: ancient masters, in identifying the essence, did not separate transformative and disciplinary teachings; now, restricted to the Vinaya school, we exclusively rely on the disciplinary teaching. Although the Vinaya Piṭaka is broad and its marks of practice are extremely manifold, the two gates of prohibition and permission subsume them completely without remainder; because confronting faculties is unequal, establishing the teachings differs; if not separated into two, their substantial marks would be commingled; first marking the two teachings, the intention resides right here; therefore it says "in order to clarify." (The old records took this as establishing the essence, which is mistaken.)
