In showing the offenses: because ancient and contemporary authorities judged them differently, it is examined through a question. In the answer, first the ancient explanation is presented. From 'now' below, the correct judgment: the first line clarifies that failing to learn has a single grade. From 'ignorance' below, it clarifies the heavy and light grades of ignorance. Citing the Vinaya to verify the heavy grade refers to the precept of not restraining the ears. In doubt, there is still some involvement with understanding, so the offense is reduced in gravity. Question: From where does the offense of failing to learn derive? Answer: When the marks are explained at the reception of precepts, relying on a teacher is enjoined; now, violating this teaching results in the imputation of a duṣkṛta offense.
