In the boundaries, there are two divisions according to the teaching: first, the heading of the section. From 'study' below, the direct explanation: the upper part explains failing to learn. 'Study' means upholding and practicing; since it must never be abandoned midway, it says 'from beginning to end'. 'Beginning' is based on first receiving [the precepts]; 'end' refers to the end of one's bodily life. The lower part explains ignorance. 'Limiting to five rains retreats': in the ordination ritual, five rains retreats of study are enjoined; if there is something not yet known, an offense is not immediately imputed; after five rains retreats, not understanding matters reveals slackness in comprehension, so an offense is imputed accordingly.
