In relation to practice: leaving the teacher after five rains retreats is based on the doctrinal limit; if considered in terms of accomplishing practice, one does so only upon reaching sagehood; although not violating the teaching, it does not fail to violate practice. In the text, first the heading. From 'fearing' below, next the explanation: first, recounting its establishment. 'Unrestrained' means licentious and undisciplined. 'Equating oneself with sages in self-restraint' means haughty arrogance. 'Superior and inferior' is not limited by the number of rains retreats, but merely being superior to oneself; taking one another mutually as teachers, it is therefore said 'yielding to each other'. From 'text' below, citing verification; this also comes from the reception procedure. Dependence requires possessing three virtues: first, completing ten rains retreats; second, having wisdom; third, being diligent in instruction. Reaching the Dharmakāya need not be confined to a single lifetime. Moreover, even the Tathāgata takes the Dharma as his teacher; how could any ordinary fool stand on his own!
