In emptiness of nature, there are three parts. First, it indicates the contemplated object, which is the two words 'all phenomena.' The expression 'all phenomena' comprehensively embraces everything: in various sutras and treatises, it is explained in terms of primary and environmental [retribution], causes and fruits, worldly and transworldly, with-outflows and outflow-free, form and mind or non-form and non-mind, good, evil, or indeterminate, or the aggregates, realms, and bases, and so forth. If treated according to the general discussion, it comprehensively contemplates all phenomena; here regarding deśanā, it provisionally points to sinful karma as the contemplative object. The phrase 'nature is empty and without self' is the contemplating wisdom. Offenses exist from conditions and originally lack self-nature; conditions are mind and objects: false mind and objects unite to form karma, and the nature of karma is inherently empty, not made empty. Due to the presence of false grasping, one undergoes cyclic existence; merely breaking false grasping, seeking the offense, it cannot be found; the place where it cannot be found is arbitrarily termed the principle of emptiness. As for 'emptiness of nature': those of lesser capacity have inferior wisdom and cannot directly see emptiness in phenomena; they must rely on analytical deduction to investigate the essence of phenomena to the utmost, and only then is it empty. Among them, sharp and dull must be distinguished: the sharp directly realize the essence of phenomena as empty; the dull analyze phenomena to see emptiness. Or it is said: the Substantial School realizes only the emptiness of persons, while the Nominal Designation School realizes the two emptinesses of persons and phenomena. From 'this...' downward, it determines the stage. The Lesser Vehicle comprehensively includes śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas; according to the teachings they ride upon, truths and conditions differ, but in terms of severing and realizing, they identically see the principle of emptiness.
